The Pflugerville Panthers continued their winning ways Friday night in a game that was over almost before it started, 42-10.  Pflugerville led 14-0 before most fans even had a chance to open their popcorn.  The win moves Big Blue to 5-3 on the year, 3-2 in district play. Akins drops to 2-6, 1-4 and is tied for last place.

Pflugerville got off to a fast start as Alex Dean connected on an 80 yard touchdown pass to Drew Travis on the game’s first place. On Akins’ first play Savon Thomas picked up an Eagle fumble and rumbled 42 yards for another touchdown.  After yet another Akins turnover, Desmond Smith ran in another touchdown from 50 yards out to make the score 21-0.  He later dove in from two yards out to close out the 1st quarter scoring at 28-0.  It was the highest scoring quarter since the Panthers put up 28 against Westwood in 2007.

In the second quarter, Pflugerville got on the board again as senior Larry Watkins got his first points of the year on a four yard touchdown run.  The Eagles added a late field goal to avoid the shutout and half ended with Pflugerville on top 35-3.  .

After halftime, Sammy Flowers got his lone score in the 3rd quarter.  Akins finally broke through on a long touchdown run late in the 4th quarter for their only touchdown.  Final score: Pflugerville 42, Akins 10.  The Panthers remain undefeated in the short series at 2-0 after winning 49-0 in the first ever meeting in 2008.

This week, Pflugerville returns home to face Bowie on Senior Night.  The Bulldogs squeaked out a victory last year in the final minute to spoil Pflugerville’s bid at an undefeated District title.  The Panthers will seek to spoil Bowie’s bid for a playoff berth this year. Pflugerville got another big win over the Austin Maroons, 23-17. The Panthers improve their record to 4-3, 2-2 in District 25-5A play. Austin falls to 5-1 and 3-1. They were previously undefeated in district play. Pflugerville has won 2 straight in the series and is now 5-1 in the All-Time series.

Pflugerville got off to a strong start as they forced and recovered a fumble on the game’s first play.  Sammy Flowers then took a handoff and wound his way through the Maroon defense for a 33 yard touchdown run.  Flowers added another touchdown later in the quarter to push the lead to 14-0.

In the second quarter, neither team scored and the Panthers took the 14-0 lead into halftime.

After halftime , the Maroons began their comeback.  They returned a fumble for a touchdown, then added a field goal.  Austin next took the lead on a six yard touchdown run, 17-14.

In the final quarter, Pflugerville began its comeback.  Alex Dean found Drew Travis on a stunning 33 yard touchdown pass that gave the Panthers the lead back.  But the extra point try failed and the lead remained at 20-17.  Sean Ianno made up for the miss with a 44 yard field goal to push Pflugerville’s lead to 23-17.  But the defense would have to hold.  Austin moved the ball to the Pflugerville 24 yard line with a minute to play.  But on 4th down with seconds to play the Maroon quarterback was sacked.  Savon Thomas pounced on the fumble to preserve the Pflugerville victory.

This week, Pflugerville goes on the road to face Akins. The game will be at Burger Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.  Last year, Pflugerville won 49-0 at Kuempel Stadium.
