It was great last year and best of all it’s free.  Buses leave from Pflugerville High and Hendrickson High parking lots. Don’t fight the traffic to get to Town Lake, stay here and watch a great fireworks show.

The Pflugerville Panthers concluded Spring football drills with the 2009 Spring Football game this past week. Defense dominated for both squads, with the Blue team winning 16-0. It was something of a surprise to Head Coach George Herrmann as most of the playmaker from 2008’s defense have graduated, including University of Texas signee Alex Okafor.

Quarterback Jordan Townes and running back Larry Watkins led the Blue to the victory. Leading 3-0, Watkins capped off a 50 yard drive with a 6 yard touchdown run to end the half. The other touchdown came on a Townes’ 38 yard pass to Sammie Flowers near the end of the game.

Alex Dean led the White team and completed 28-yard pass down to the Blue 24 yardline in the Whites only scoring opportunity. The Blue defense held strong, though and did not allow any points.

The Panthers will kickoff the 2009 Season with a home game against arch-rival Leander on August 28th.

Pflugervill 35 - Anderson 7The Pflugerville Panthers will kickoff the 2009 Season with a home game against Arch Rival, Leander at Kuempel Stadium on August 28th.  The teams have played almost every year since 1960.  Pflugerville will look to end a four game skid, the longest in the series.  The Panthers will remain at home after an off week, as they welcome the Judson Rockets for Homecoming 2009.   Pflugerville concludes the non-district portion of the schedule with a trip to Dragon Stadium to face Round Rock.

Pflugerville will travel to Bastrop on September 25th to open up 25-5A action.  The first Friday in October sees the Panthers hosting perennial power Westlake.  The week after that will be Pflugerville’s only Thursday night game as they travel to House Park to take on the Anderson Trojans.  Then the Panthers return home to take on Austin before facing Akins at Burger Stadium.

Halloween Eve brings the Bowie Bulldogs to Kuempel Stadium for Senior Night as the Panthers will look to avenge a last minute loss last season that cost Pflugerville an undisputed District Title.  The last regular season game will be against city rival, Connally and will be held at Dragon Stadium.

Last week, Pflugerville closed out the regular season with a win over crosstown rival Connally.  They also clinched a share of the District 25-5A Championship along with Westlake and Bowie.  The Panthers were led by Chris Mercado who scored two touchdowns on the ground.  Jeremy Burleson had a dazzling 71 yard punt return for a touchdown to seal the victory 31-14

The Rangers wrapped up a co-championship against San Antonio Roosevelt in a game that was televised on Fox Sports Southwest.  Smithson Valley dominated the Rough Riders, 24-7.

The Panthers were 12-4 overall and 4-3 in 14-5A play last season and made their second appearance in the State Championship game.  They will look to improve upon their best season since 1970.

Smithson Valley went 12-2 last year, advancing to the 5A Division II State Quarterfinals.  They met district rival, San Antonio Madison and fell just short, 38-35.  The Rangers were looking to avenge an earlier meeting that Madison won 29-14.

Congratulations to the 8th Grade “A” and “B” teams for completing undefeated seasons this year.

The B-Team are District Champs, they fought a hard game last night against the Westview Wildcats @ Westview but came out victorious, 24-20. They went undefeated all season, 8-0, district 4-0. These are the most points that have been scored against them. Only two other games they were scored on, Westview, non-district game, 2 points, and Parkcrest 6 points, every other game the Panthers held their opponents at 0.

The A-Team finished off their undefeated season last night with a victory over Westview also. The game had been postponed due to lightning from last night.

Again, Congratulations on two great seasons. Keep up the hard work.

The Pflugerville Freshman Blue team finished the season as District 25-5A Champions with a perfect 7-0 record after a 40-20 victory over the Connally Cougars.  The Blue Panthers were 7-2 on the year.  They dropped their first two non-district games before reeling off 7 straight wins to end the season.

The Freshman Gold team finished 6-3, 4-3 in 25-5A play.  I would like to update the results for the JV teams, but I don’t have that information.

Congratulations to all these young men on their fine performances this season.
