ROUND ROCK — The Pflugerville Panthers snagged the last playoff spot in rugged District 16-5A, getting out of Round Rock with a thrilling 42-41 overtime victory Friday.
The teams matched touchdowns the whole way, with neither side leading by more than seven points.
And after a combined 992 yards offense, defense was the key, as the Panthers snuffed out the Dragons' two-point effort after the final score. They swarmed quarterback Garret Gerds and lineman Thomas Gabel, who hauled in Gerds' desperation pass and dragged the pile to the 2-yard line.
Gerds threw for four TDs and a school-record 402 yards for Round Rock (4-5, 3-2).
Adrian Dilworth led Pflugerville's high-powered rushing attack with 128 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Woodward scored two times in the second half and totaled 98 yards for the Panthers (4-5, 3-2), who knocked Georgetown and Stony Point out of playoff contention with their goal-line stand on the extra-point try. |
